Peplink Firmware 8.6.0: SpeedFusion Boost, Orbit WAN and Smarter Multi-WAN Connectivity

Peplink has released Firmware 8.6.0, and for users who depend on multiple internet connections while traveling, working remotely, operating on the water, or managing mission-critical networks, this is one of the more significant Peplink firmware updates in recent years. Released on July 29, 2026, Firmware 8.6.0 includes a long list of new features, improvements, security enhancements and bug fixes across Peplink’s current router lineup. 

Two additions stand out for MobileMustHave customers: SpeedFusion Boost, which improves the way dissimilar internet connections work together inside a bonded SpeedFusion tunnel, and the new Orbit WAN functionality, which gives supported Peplink routers deeper awareness and management of satellite connections such as Starlink and OneWeb. For anyone combining cellular, Starlink, Ethernet, Wi-Fi WAN or multiple satellite terminals, these changes have the potential to make a Peplink setup faster, more adaptable and easier to manage.

SpeedFusion Boost: A Smarter Approach to Bonding

SpeedFusion has long been one of the biggest reasons to choose Peplink.

Instead of simply having several internet connections available for failover or load balancing, SpeedFusion can combine connections through a bonded tunnel. That can improve reliability, maintain sessions when a WAN connection drops and, with bandwidth bonding, allow multiple connections to contribute to overall throughput.

The challenge is that not every internet connection behaves the same way.

A 5G cellular connection may have excellent speeds one minute and become congested the next. LTE could be slower but more consistent. Starlink can deliver very high throughput but experience latency changes, satellite handoffs or brief disruptions caused by obstructions. Put several of these connections together, and the weakest or least consistent WAN can sometimes hold back the performance of the overall bond.

SpeedFusion Boost is designed to address that problem.

Peplink describes Boost as a way to improve throughput across bonded WAN connections by preventing unstable links from dragging down overall performance. It is particularly relevant when connections experience satellite handovers, temporary obstructions, network congestion, weather-related degradation or other rapidly changing conditions.

Behind the scenes, SpeedFusion Boost uses a more dynamic approach to distributing traffic between the available WAN connections. Rather than treating every connection as if its performance characteristics remain constant, Boost continually adapts as conditions change. The goal is to take better advantage of the strongest links while reducing the negative impact of a connection that temporarily falls behind.

SpeedFusion Boost: Bonding Cellular and LEO Satellite WANs

This is particularly interesting for the types of networks many MobileMustHave customers build. Consider an RV, boat or remote work site with Starlink connected alongside a 5G cellular connection. Both connections may be fast, but they behave very differently.

Starlink performance can change because of obstructions, satellite transitions and environmental conditions. Cellular can change as you move between towers, switch bands or encounter congestion. Traditional bonding has to account for those differences, and the performance of the overall tunnel can sometimes suffer when one WAN temporarily degrades. With SpeedFusion Boost enabled, the router is better equipped to react as those conditions change. That makes Boost useful for combinations such as:

  • Starlink plus 5G or LTE cellular
  • Multiple cellular connections from different carriers
  • Multiple Starlink terminals
  • Starlink combined with fixed broadband
  • OneWeb and Starlink in enterprise satellite deployments
  • Any group of WAN connections with significantly different latency, speed or reliability

Peplink specifically calls out Starlink, 5G and other suitable WAN connections in its Firmware 8.6.0 release notes, and the company has positioned Boost as a major step forward for environments where network quality changes constantly. For mobile users, that describes everyday life.

Already Updated? Make Sure to Enable SpeedFusion Boost

One important detail is that installing Firmware 8.6.0 does not necessarily mean your existing SpeedFusion tunnel will immediately begin using Boost. For this initial release, SpeedFusion Boost must be enabled in the SpeedFusion tunnel options. Peplink has taken a cautious approach rather than automatically changing the behavior of existing SpeedFusion deployments.

Once enabled, you can verify that Boost is being used on supported traffic through the Active Sessions interface, where a lightning-bolt indicator can appear. Boost is primarily focused on improving TCP traffic, which includes many common downloads, web applications and other internet sessions. For existing SpeedFusion users, we recommend treating Boost like any significant networking change: enable it when you have time to test your normal applications and compare performance with your specific combination of WAN connections.


Orbit WAN: Peplink Gets More Satellite-Aware

SpeedFusion Boost improves what happens to traffic once multiple WAN connections are working together. Orbit WAN improves how Peplink understands the satellite connections themselves. Peplink has steadily expanded its Starlink integration over several firmware generations. Firmware 8.6.0 takes that concept further by generalizing satellite management under the new Orbit WAN framework and introducing native OneWeb integration.

Rather than seeing a connected satellite terminal as nothing more than another Ethernet internet connection, Orbit WAN allows a supported Peplink router to identify which WAN interface has a satellite terminal attached and access additional information about that connection. In practical terms, you can designate the appropriate WAN connection as an Orbit WAN connection and associate supported satellite services such as Starlink or OneWeb with it. This does not physically transform the Ethernet port into different hardware. Instead, it makes Peplink more aware of what is connected to that WAN and allows the router and InControl to use satellite-specific status and management information.

That distinction matters. A basic router might simply know that an Ethernet WAN is online or offline. A Peplink router with satellite integration can have access to additional information that helps explain why a connection is behaving the way it is—for example, whether a Starlink terminal is experiencing an obstruction.

Starlink and OneWeb Under One Framework

The change from a Starlink-specific approach to Orbit WAN also gives Peplink room to support a much broader satellite ecosystem. Firmware 8.6.0 officially adds OneWeb integration support, which Peplink lists across its Firmware 8.6.0-supported models with the exception of the HD1 Dome Pro. Peplink’s Orbit WAN interface can now be used to identify and manage supported Starlink and OneWeb WAN connections from the router interface.

For the average RVer using one Starlink terminal, this may initially seem like a modest interface improvement. For marine, public safety, enterprise and other mission-critical deployments, however, the implications are much larger. A network could potentially combine multiple satellite providers rather than depending on a single constellation. Starlink and OneWeb can become separate WAN paths and then be combined with cellular or other terrestrial connections using Peplink’s multi-WAN and SpeedFusion technologies.

That is also where the new MAX Orbit 2, MAX Orbit 4 and MAX Orbit 8 routers fit into Peplink’s broader strategy. These routers are purpose-built around multiple satellite terminals and multi-orbit connectivity, with the Orbit 4 providing four dedicated Orbit Ethernet ports and the Orbit 8 increasing that to eight 2.5Gbps Orbit ports.

Better Starlink WAN Health Checks

Firmware 8.6.0 also improves how Peplink monitors Starlink connectivity. The update changes Starlink WAN health-check behavior to use stable public endpoints—8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1 under the specified health-check configurations. The goal is to reduce situations where a temporary Starlink event causes the router to unnecessarily determine that the entire WAN has failed.

That might sound like a small change, but unnecessary failovers can be disruptive in a multi-WAN network. Combined with Orbit WAN’s additional satellite awareness and SpeedFusion Boost’s ability to better cope with changing link characteristics, Firmware 8.6.0 creates a much more cohesive approach to using Starlink as part of a larger connectivity system.

More Than Just SpeedFusion and Satellite Changes

Although SpeedFusion Boost and Orbit WAN are likely to be the most exciting improvements for many MobileMustHave customers, Firmware 8.6.0 goes much further. The update introduces native WireGuard support for Remote User Access, improved eSIM management, per-WAN bandwidth limiting, expanded Synergy capabilities, Jumbo Frame support on selected models, enhanced cellular features, security improvements and the new SpeedFusion Score feature within InControl for supported hardware.

SpeedFusion Score uses network characteristics including latency, jitter and packet delivery to provide a simplified indication of SpeedFusion connection quality, potentially making it easier to understand how well a bonded deployment is performing.
