The All New Balance 310 5G: A New Kind of Enterprise and Mobile Multi-WAN Router

The new Peplink Balance 310 5G HW3 (not to be confused with the older Balance 310 5G) is not simply another 5G router with a faster modem.

It represents a different approach to building a high-performance Peplink network.

Rather than packing multiple fixed cellular modems into a single configuration and deciding for you what your connectivity stack should look like, the Balance 310 5G HW3 acts more like a powerful, expandable connectivity hub. It gives businesses, enterprise IT teams, mobile professionals, public safety organizations, live-production crews, and advanced mobile users the processing power and interfaces to build the combination of 5G, fiber, fixed broadband, satellite, Wi-Fi WAN, and other connections their deployment actually requires.

That flexibility is backed by some serious hardware: 4Gbps router throughput, 1Gbps SpeedFusion VPN throughput, 10G Ethernet and SFP+ connectivity, eight 2.5GbE PoE+ LAN ports, Wi-Fi 7, an integrated global 5G modem, Docker support with 8GB of internal storage, and a fanless chassis rated from -40°F to 149°F.

For organizations that have outgrown the traditional “router plus modem” mindset, this may be one of the most interesting Peplink platforms yet.

The Big Idea Behind the New Balance 310 5G

The easiest way to understand the Balance 310 5G HW3 is to stop thinking of it strictly as a cellular router.

Think of it as the central connectivity platform for an entire deployment.

Peplink describes the Balance 310 5G as consolidating networking, switching, Wi-Fi, 5G connectivity, and edge computing into one rugged device. Instead of deploying a separate router, PoE switch, cellular gateway, wireless access point, and edge-computing device, many installations can bring those functions together in a single platform.

That is especially valuable when the internet sources at one location may be completely different from those at another.

One site might have fiber plus 5G backup. Another could use Starlink plus cellular. A mobile command center might require several cellular connections, satellite, Wi-Fi WAN, and local PoE devices. An RV-based business or mobile production operation may need a similarly diverse mix but in a compact package capable of surviving high cabinet temperatures.

The Balance 310 5G gives you the ports and processing headroom to build around those requirements instead of forcing every deployment into the same WAN configuration.

That expandability is one of the biggest themes highlighted in our hands-on walkthrough of the HW3 platform.

4Gbps Routing Changes What You Can Build Around This Router

The Balance 310 5G is rated for 4Gbps of router throughput.

That matters because adding faster WAN connections is only useful if the router itself has enough horsepower to process the traffic.

A high-end network today may have a combination of multi-gig fiber, satellite internet, multiple 5G connections, fixed wireless access, and local multi-gig devices. A router designed around older gigabit-era assumptions can quickly become the bottleneck.

The Balance 310 5G pairs its 4Gbps routing capacity with a 10G Multi-Gig Ethernet WAN interface and a 10G SFP+ interface. The SFP+ port can be configured as WAN or LAN through the router's Web Admin interface. Both 10G interfaces are backward compatible with slower Ethernet standards.

There is an important distinction here: 10G interfaces do not mean 10Gbps router throughput. The published routing capacity is 4Gbps. What the 10G ports provide is interface flexibility and headroom so your physical port does not necessarily become the limiting factor when connecting high-speed upstream or downstream infrastructure.

Built-In 5G—With Room to Add More

At the center of the cellular side is one integrated global 5G modem supporting both 5G Standalone (SA) and Non-Standalone (NSA) networks, with LTE fallback when 5G is unavailable.

Note: At the time of publication, the Balance 310 5G HW3 is shipping with an x65 chipset 5G modem.  It is always a good idea to check the spec sheet as this can be upgraded in the future.

Peplink lists theoretical maximum cellular rates of 4.1Gbps download and 900Mbps upload on 5G, with CAT-20 LTE rates of up to 2Gbps down and 211Mbps up. Actual speeds will, of course, depend on your carrier, signal quality, network congestion, frequency bands, plan, and location.

In our video walkthrough, we identify the onboard platform as using an X65-generation 5G chipset. More importantly, we highlight that the internal modem does not have to define the final cellular capacity of the system. Peplink designed the platform so additional cellular connections can be added using products such as its 5G Adapter or 5G Dongle.

That creates some extremely interesting deployment possibilities.

For example, our walkthrough describes using the embedded 5G modem plus two USB-connected 5G dongles to create a potential three-5G configuration, while still retaining the dedicated Ethernet and SFP+ interfaces for other WAN sources.

That could mean three cellular connections plus Starlink and fiber—or some completely different combination appropriate for your application. The important point is that you get to decide.

Built for Multi-WAN: Fiber, 5G, Starlink and More

This is where the Balance 310 5G really starts earning the “Balance” name.

Peplink specifically positions the platform for combining diverse WAN technologies including fiber broadband, Wi-Fi WAN, built-in 5G, fixed wireless access, LEO satellite, and GEO satellite connectivity. Those connections can then participate in Peplink's multi-WAN architecture for failover, traffic management, smoothing, or bandwidth bonding depending on the configuration.

For MobileMustHave customers, one particularly compelling scenario is combining 5G and Starlink.

Satellite and cellular have different failure modes. A cellular network can become congested or unavailable while satellite remains healthy; satellite can encounter obstructions or other interruptions while cellular continues operating. Building around multiple independent WAN technologies gives you options when any single connection becomes unreliable.

For enterprise branches, remote operations, live events, field teams, mobile command centers, or businesses running from the road, that ability to intelligently use several independent internet sources can be far more valuable than simply having one exceptionally fast connection.

Up to 1Gbps SpeedFusion VPN Throughput

The hardware also gives SpeedFusion considerably more room to work.

Peplink rates the Balance 310 5G for 1Gbps SpeedFusion VPN throughput both without encryption and with 256-bit AES encryption, a first for this class of router from Peplink. In the past, users would see a significant drop in throughput when using an encrypted connection. It supports SpeedFusion features including Hot Failover, WAN Smoothing, and Bandwidth Bonding.

That makes this hardware particularly interesting where SpeedFusion is not merely a backup feature but a central part of the connectivity architecture.

A business might use SpeedFusion to maintain sessions as one WAN fails. A video production environment may value connection smoothing. Another installation might want to bond available WAN capacity. A distributed enterprise may use SpeedFusion as part of a resilient site-to-site architecture.

The common requirement is processing power—and the HW3 platform provides substantially more room for demanding multi-WAN designs than a basic cellular gateway.

Eight 2.5GbE LAN Ports With a Massive 240W PoE+ Budget

Networking performance is only half of this box.

The Balance 310 5G also provides eight 2.5GbE Multi-Gig LAN ports, each capable of 802.3at PoE+ output, with a combined PoE power budget of up to 240 watts.

That can dramatically simplify an installation.

Instead of adding a separate PoE switch, you may be able to power compatible wireless access points, cameras, VoIP equipment, and other network devices directly from the Balance.

The included power supply is rated at 54V DC / 5.19A, and the platform accepts 100–240V AC through that adapter. It also supports direct DC power through its terminal block, which creates interesting opportunities in vehicles, RVs, command centers, marine installations, battery-backed systems, and industrial environments.

An Important Note about DC Inputs and PoE:

This detail matters if you're designing a 12V, 24V, or other battery-powered installation.

The router's terminal block accepts 12–54V DC, but Peplink's official datasheet specifies that a 50–54V DC input is required to enable PoE output.

In other words, powering the router and powering PoE devices are not necessarily the same requirement.

In our hands-on discussion, we talk about experience testing similar hardware with a quality 48V DC-DC converter. However, for a new installation where PoE is required, we recommend designing around Peplink's published 50–54V specification rather than assuming a lower voltage will provide the full supported PoE capability.

Wi-Fi 7 Is Built In - Note the Band Configuration

The Balance 310 5G includes an integrated Wi-Fi 7 2x2 MIMO radio that can operate as a Wi-Fi access point and/or Wi-Fi WAN. One specification worth highlighting is that Peplink lists this as a simultaneous dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi 7 implementation. That distinction is important because consumers sometimes assume every product advertising Wi-Fi 7 automatically includes a 6GHz radio. That is not what the Balance 310 5G datasheet specifies. For larger wireless deployments, however, the integrated radio does not have to carry the entire Wi-Fi workload.

Built-In Peplink AP and Switch Management

The Balance 310 5G can act as the central controller for a larger Peplink wireless deployment. This will make it easy to add 6GHz Wi-FI by deploying the new Peplink AP One Enterprise Access point. The standard configuration supports management of up to 30 controlled APs or switches, with an optional license increasing that figure to 50.

That means the Balance can serve as more than the internet gateway. It can become the central point from which an administrator builds and manages a broader network. For branch locations, temporary venues, mobile operations, warehouses, hospitality environments, and larger properties, centralized AP management can reduce the amount of individual configuration required as the wireless network grows.

Docker and 8GB of Internal Storage Bring Computing to the Edge

One of the most unusual capabilities of the Balance 310 5G is native Docker support with 8GB of internal storage, plus the option to use external storage through USB. This turns the router into more than a packet-moving appliance. Peplink specifically calls out potential edge applications such as monitoring agents, security services, and network automation tools running directly on the router.

For IT and operational technology teams, that can reduce the need to install another small PC or server just to host a lightweight local application. Edge computing becomes especially interesting at remote and difficult-to-service locations. Every additional device means another power supply, another cable, another potential failure point, and another piece of equipment to maintain. Being able to move appropriate services directly onto the router can simplify the overall system architecture.

Rugged Enough for Industrial and Mobile Deployments

This is also where the physical design becomes a major part of the story. The Balance 310 5G uses a fanless chassis rated for operation from -40°F to 149°F (-40°C to 65°C) and 15% to 95% non-condensing humidity. It also includes built-in GPS, multiple power-input options, and a dedicated grounding point.

In our hands-on video, one of the things that immediately stands out is the substantial heat-sink design. The emphasis is clearly on allowing high-performance components to operate in environments that aren't always climate-controlled. That's a very different requirement from a router that spends its entire life on a desk in an air-conditioned office. Think equipment cabinets, vehicles, industrial sites, temporary installations, event infrastructure, remote locations, and mobile environments where temperature can become a genuine design consideration.

Flexible SIM and eSIM Options

The cellular side is similarly designed around flexibility. Peplink lists support for Nano-SIM, Peplink eSIM, Bring Your Own eSIM with two profiles, Remote SIM from a SIM Injector, and FusionSIM. Using eSIM allows you to take advantage of MobileMustHave's RoamLink services providing same-day activation and allowing you to use all major US-based carrier networks on one plan.

The global model also supports a broad range of LTE and sub-6GHz 5G bands, with the datasheet listing U.S. carrier certifications for AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and FirstNet. For organizations deploying the same hardware architecture across multiple regions or carriers, that flexibility can simplify both hardware standardization and logistics.


SpeedFusion Upgraded.

The Balance 310 5G lists 2 / 30 SpeedFusion VPN peers. The distinction is PrimeCare. Peplink's datasheet notes that the higher 30-peer capacity requires an active qualifying PrimeCare subscription, with PrimeCare complimentary for the first year according to the current product documentation. That makes the Balance 310 5G capable of functioning as a meaningful hub in a distributed Peplink network rather than only serving as a remote endpoint. As we noted before, the new Balance 310 5G also supports 1 Gbps throughput on both encrypted and non-encrypted SpeedFusion Tunnels, so you no longer have to prioritize speed over security.  Combine this with the new SpeedFusion Boost feature available in Firmware 8.6 and up and the Balance 310 5G feels like a powerhouse for bonded connections.

What makes it especially interesting isn't any one of those specifications. It's how they fit together. You can start with built-in 5G. Add fiber. Add Starlink. Add another cellular connection. Power access points or other PoE devices directly from the router. Run edge applications locally. Manage a larger Peplink wireless deployment. Then use SpeedFusion to determine how those WAN connections work together. That's a lot of capability in a 7.3-by-8-inch box.

For a simple mobile internet installation, there are smaller and less complex options. But if you're building an enterprise branch, mobile command center, resilient remote site, live-production network, industrial deployment, advanced RV office, or any environment where internet downtime has real consequences, the Balance 310 5G HW3 deserves a very close look.
