Introducing the Victron Orion XS 12/12-50A DC-DC Battery Charger
The Victron Orion XS 12/12-50A is a configurable, non-isolated DC-DC battery charger designed to charge a 12V auxiliary or house battery from a 12V starter battery and alternator. With adjustable 1–50A charging, up to 98.5% efficiency, and support for conventional and smart alternators, it is built for RVs, vans, marine systems, and other dual-battery installations where controlled alternator charging is important.
The Orion XS provides up to 700W of continuous output at 14V and 50A, with suitable cooling at ambient temperatures up to 40°C. Available output depends on voltage, current limits, and installation conditions. Built-in Bluetooth with VictronConnect allows charging current, voltage, battery settings, and operating behavior to be configured and monitored directly from a compatible device.
The charger also supports configurable engine shutdown detection, adjustable power-supply operation, and parallel installation when additional charging capacity is required.
Core Functions
- 50A Configurable Charging: Input and output current can be adjusted from 1–50A to match the alternator, wiring, and battery system.
- 98.5% Maximum Efficiency: Efficient power conversion reduces unnecessary heat and energy loss during high-current charging.
- Smart Alternator Support: Configurable engine shutdown detection supports conventional and variable-voltage alternators.
- VictronConnect & VE.Direct: Configure and monitor locally over Bluetooth with VictronConnect, or connect to a GX device through VE.Direct. Remote monitoring through VRM requires an internet-connected GX device. VE.Smart Networking supports remote battery sensing; synchronised charging is not supported.
- Expandable Charging Capacity: Multiple Orion XS chargers can operate in parallel when additional charging current is required.
Installation and Compatibility
This non-isolated charger is designed for 12V systems with a common negative/ground connection. Select wiring, battery fusing, and mounting clearances for the installation, and configure charging settings for the battery and alternator. See the Orion XS installation manual for wiring, protection, and ventilation requirements.
Best For
- RV and motorhome house battery systems
- Camper vans and overland vehicles
- Marine auxiliary battery systems
- Smart-alternator dual-battery installations
