The Victron Orion 24/12-80 is built for systems where a 24V battery bank or DC electrical platform needs to supply dependable 12V power. It converts 24V DC input into a regulated 12V output, making it useful for running 12V accessories, controls, lighting, electronics, pumps, or other properly sized DC loads from a higher-voltage system.

This model is especially helpful in RV, marine, overland, commercial vehicle, and off-grid installations where the main power system is 24V but critical devices still require 12V. It provides 80A continuous output current, up to 90A maximum output current, and an adjustable 10–15V output range with a factory setting of 13.2V.

Because this adjustable-output Orion model is suitable to buffer-charge a battery, it can also be used to support a 12V starter or accessory battery in an otherwise 24V system. For higher-current applications, up to five adjustable-output units can be connected in parallel when the system is properly designed.

Product Role

The Victron Orion 24/12-80 helps supply regulated 12V DC power from a 24V DC system.

It can help support:

  • 12V accessories in a 24V vehicle, marine, or off-grid power system
  • A 12V starter or accessory battery in an otherwise 24V installation
  • Higher-current 12V loads that exceed the capacity of smaller converters
  • Parallel converter setups where more output current is required

Why It Matters

Many mobile power systems are built around 24V battery banks because higher system voltage can reduce current and improve efficiency in larger installations. The challenge is that many common RV, marine, vehicle, and communication accessories still operate at 12V. The Orion 24/12-80 bridges that gap by providing a dedicated 12V output from the 24V side of the system.

This is different from a solar charger or alternator charger. The Orion 24/12-80 is a high-power DC-DC converter intended to provide regulated DC output, not to act as a smart multi-stage lithium charger unless the application has been specifically designed around its adjustable output behavior. Use it where a strong 12V supply is needed from a 24V platform.

Best For

  • 24V RV and overland systems that still need 12V accessory power
  • Marine systems with 24V battery banks and 12V electronics
  • Commercial vehicles with mixed 24V and 12V equipment
  • Off-grid power systems with 24V storage and 12V control loads
  • Supporting a 12V starter or accessory battery from a 24V system
  • Higher-current 12V DC loads where smaller converters are not enough

Key Features

  • 24V to 12V conversion: Steps 18–35V DC input down to a regulated 12V-class output for mixed-voltage systems.
  • 80A continuous output: Provides high-current 12V DC power for properly sized accessories and DC loads.
  • Adjustable output voltage: Output can be adjusted from 10–15V, with a factory setting of 13.2V.
  • Battery buffer-charge capable: Suitable for supporting a 12V starter or accessory battery in an otherwise 24V system.
  • Parallel-capable design: Adjustable-output models can be connected in parallel, with up to five units used to increase available output current.
  • Remote on/off: Allows control with a low-power switch or engine run/stop signal instead of using a high-current switch in the input wiring.
  • Fan-assisted cooling: Temperature-controlled fan cooling helps support high-output operation.

System Integration

The Orion 24/12-80 fits on the DC side of a mobile power system, between a 24V source and the 12V loads or accessory battery it supports. In a well-designed installation, it can allow a system to take advantage of a 24V house battery architecture while still powering the 12V equipment common in RVs, boats, service vehicles, and mobile workspaces.

This converter is non-isolated, meaning the input and output are not galvanically isolated. That makes it appropriate for many shared-ground DC systems, but installation should be confirmed for the electrical layout, grounding approach, wire sizing, fuse protection, load profile, and battery use case before publishing or installing.

MobileMustHave Expert Note

MobileMustHave helps customers think beyond single components and into complete system behavior. A 24V system with 12V loads needs the right converter strategy, wire sizing, protection, and load planning so accessories work reliably without compromising the larger battery and charging architecture.
