Dual Modem Device
This mobile router is equipped with two embedded cellular modems. This will allow you to utilize two cellular connections at the same time, providing advanced traffic routing and load balancing capabilities as well as near-instant failover from one provider to another. Internet traffic can be routed in a variety of ways using Peplink's proprietary Outbound Policy Management Algorithms. Dual modem devices may be capable of utilizing SpeedFusion technology, also known as "WAN bonding", which may require separate licensing. See SpeedFusion section below.
Single Modem Device
This mobile router is equipped with a single cellular modem. This device may have multiple SIM card slots but can connect to one cellular provider at a time. Single modem devices may include a USB port or expansion slot to add additional modems. Switching between SIM card slots can be done via the management console, typically in 30-60 seconds allowing time for the modem to reboot utilizing the auxiliary SIM slot(s). Higher-end single modem devices often have faster maximum download/upload speeds then other devices but lack the redundancy found in a multi-modem device. Our multi-modem collection of devices can be found here.
Internet traffic can be routed in a variety of ways using Peplink's proprietary Outbound Policy Management Algorithms. Single modem devices may be capable of utilizing SpeedFusion technology, also known as "WAN bonding", which may require separate licensing. Single modem devices can bond the single cellular connection with the devices WAN port or WIFI-as-WAN sources if the device supports these functions. See SpeedFusion section on this page for additional information.
Category 7 Modem
This mobile router is equipped with one or more category 7 LTE Advanced cellular modems with a maximum download speed of 300Mbps and a maximum upload speed of 150Mbps (typical speeds range from 10-75mbps depending on cellular network conditions and coverage). The category of the modem impacts the maximum upload and download speed of the device and what cellular bands or "channels" the device can connect to. Cellular bands act similarly to "channels" on television, each cellular provider broadcasts on specific bands. Category 7 modems support connecting to the primary bands of all major carriers such as Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T and include additional LTE secondary bands for increased speed and coverage in many areas. This includes access to Band 14, AT&T's FirstNET band and Band 71 for TMobile's rural band. For a complete list of bands supported, click the documentation tab for detailed specifications.
Category 7 modems are extremely popular as they blend strong performance and maximum data plan compatibility and value. Category 7 modems are very popular for mobile workers and for those who consider the internet "mission-critical" as they come in many dual modem mobile routers capable of bonding. Category 7 modems are capable of video calling, VOIP, streaming, general internet use, and, when paired with a dual modem capable device, support bonding of multiple cellular connections. See SpeedFusion section for more information.
This device is licensed for SpeedFusion access. SpeedFusion is Peplink's proprietary WAN bonding solution that can bond multiple internet connections together into a single, more resilient connection for added connection reliability. SpeedFusion-capable devices create a VPN tunnel that allows multiple internet connections to act as a single connection. SpeedFusion supports WAN-Smoothing, a technology that helps to prevent packet loss which is typically the cause for unstable internet connections. In order to utilize SpeedFusion you must either host your own SpeedFusion instance at a secondary location/datacenter or use Peplink's SpeedFusion Cloud service which is available for an additional monthly subscription fee. This device includes data allotment for SpeedFusion cloud transfer at up to 100Mbps per second (amount of data will change based on the hardware). Balance 20x Cat-7
It took a while to figure out what hardware would meet my needs. I decided on The Balance 20 with a 42g antenna, so far so good. It was a breeze to install and it works great. I’m starting with the t 800 plan and it’s giving me 50gb consistently. Hope it works like this when I’m traveling.
With the 8.3 update made this product one of the cheapest to get into but can be expanded to 2 each 5G modems plus the Cat 7 it comes with for a total of three modems. Allows you to expand without re-buying your router.
Outstanding Value, Feature Rich, Excellent Support
As a Principle Network Engineer and Architect (30+ years) I am pretty well versed at most things in data communications. I’ve dealt with a plethora of different routers, firewalls, SDWAN solutions, load balancers and the like throughout my career. I often get frustrated with consumer level products that tend to dumb down the interface, features and functionality as a trade-off for ease of use. On the other hand I get frustrated around prosumer and fully commercial products that are cryptic, non-intuitive with documentation that does not address rudimentary functionality that is present but implemented very specific to the manufactures' philosophy. My experience with the Balance 20X has been none of that. It is a comprehensive and very versatile platform. Its features are well documented by the manufacturer and the additional guides offered by MobileMustHave are extremely well done and informative. The latest 8.3 firmware makes this sub $600 solutions a power-house allowing me to combine my Starlink, Resort WiFi and T-Mobile Home Internet service seamlessly. Whats more is that I have room for even more connectivity with the built-in LTE modem and the ability to add a 5G modem through the USB as WAN option or expansion port. I have been using the unit for over a week and it has performed very well, predictably and reliably. I would recommend it to anyone budget minded with a need for versatile connectivity options. Additionally, the pre-sales and customer service staff at MobileMustHave are quick to respond, thorough and professional.
